Honest Review: Jawda’s Stylish Side-Wrap Abaya Set

Bismillah arRahman arRaheem & Asalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatooh; my dear Readers

Please note; this is not a sponsored post, I purchased this item directly and am giving my experience with it objectively along with my review of the item I purchased. Please keep this in mind as you read this post.

I wanted to pop on here and post a quick review of an item I recently purchased from the British modest wear company; Jawda. I’ve seen a fair bit of their designs floating around social media for the past year or so, and over the winter, they posted a design that I instantly fell in love with! This one: their side-wrap 2-piece Abaya set. Unfortunately, when I went to purchase it at the time, it was always sold out. Fast forward to a couple of weekends ago, I was at work and looking at outfits for the summer; my mind went back to Jawda’s beautiful side-wrap abaya set, and I had to have it.

Thankfully, the set was in stock in the color and size I wanted, and boom, order placed. I figured I’d get a ton of wear out of it as, even though it’s called a 2-piece abaya set, it’s actually, in all frankness, a tunic and skirt combo. I’ve been seeing a lot of tunic/skirt combos online nicknamed 2-piece abaya sets, so I’m figuring the term is just a part of the ever-evolving 2024-2025 Hijabi Fashion Zeitgeist, which is ever-changing.

Anyway onto the review, which I know is why you are here!

So, yes I ordered the Navy blue side-wrap 2-piece Abaya set which can be found on the Jawda website HERE. They were running a promotion for a free modal hijab and undercap with an abaya order so I picked out a navy blue modal hijab as my Hijab collection was lacking in a Navy blue Hijab. I am 5ft4inches so ordered a size 56 which would be my usual Abaya length anyway. Read below for size details.

Shipping: Since I live in the USA and Jawda is based out of the UK, shipping took a few days. After placing my order on a weekend, it took about 3-4 business days for me to receive an email stating that my item was shipped out. The set came via USPS and Royal Mail, and I received my item about a week and a half after I placed my order. Not too shabby and honestly quicker than some US-based companies! (I’m looking at you, Vela…)

Quality/Construction: All Jawda products are made in the UK; they apparently even source their fabrics from within the UK, which to me is a huge selling point! I get an ethical, transparent vibe from the company. Now, I’m not sure where the fabric itself is produced, but given that they are sourcing and making their garments on home turf in the UK, it means they have more quality control. The set I received, while very simple in construction, is incredibly well made; in fact, I am planning to order another garment from them soon as I foresee their items lasting absolute ages. All seams are well and tightly serged, the fit is good, and overall this is a well-constructed set. No loose threads or anything. My only issue with the construction is that the waistline of the skirt is a tube with elastic, which I foresee could twist inside the waistline, and I think adding a drawstring to the waistline would be a boon for sisters who are curvy or whose weight fluctuates without having to open the skirt waistline to switch out the elastic.

Practicality of the set: While the design is simple and practical, it is stylish in that due to its simplicity, you can easily pair the tunic or skirt with other items in your wardrobe, thereby bulking up your modest wardrobe while keeping yourself on a budget (if you are on one). The set, in addition to being practical from a modest fashion perspective, is also maternity and nursing friendly. The tunic has snaps at the shoulders and a tie side closure, and the skirt is ample in size with an elastic waistline. The set is designed to fit a bit oversized and will most likely fit throughout most of one’s pregnancy and afterward for nursing; you can easily pull aside the top layer of the tunic to nurse in.

What I didnโ€™t like about this set and suggested improvements to design/fit: So, I have a petite but well-proportioned frame, and I found that the neckline of this set was a bit on the small side. For everyday wear, I will need to keep the shoulder snaps open and just leave the side tie tied for comfortable wear. If you have a longer or more slender neckline, then the neckline of this set should pose no problems for you. I also think the set would be better with pockets in the skirt and a drawstring at the waist along with the waistline elastic. I did not find the sizing to be an issue as the set is designed to fit oversized, but sisters who fall outside of the size range listed on the website will not be able to wear this set as there are no specific plus-sized options, although again, the set is sized to fit oversized. Do check out the size chart or email their customer service with any questions. Lastly, and this is entirely my fault, I didn’t notice that the tie waist set is made in a heavyweight powder crepe. The material is incredibly smooth, like butter, but it is definitely on the heavier side. This set is designed for cool-cold weather wear. I attempted to wear this set out on a warm day in the mid-70s and roasted internally. LOL For spring/summer wear, choose items from the Melange fabric line. Their powder-touch crepe is absolutely cool/cold weather wear appropriate. Hence, I am reluctantly packing this set away for summer. They do have a 2-piece abaya set for spring/summer in their warm weather appropriate melange fabric.

Lastly, I know many sisters prefer natural fabrics for their garments, and unfortunately, Jawda doesnโ€™t have any cotton or linen garments at this time. Perhaps as they grow, they will consider adding some natural fabrics to the mix.

Ok onto the picturesโ€ฆ

Ok, I hope this review was helpful! Let me know what you think. I definitely plan to purchase a summer-weight garment from them in the next couple of weeks, insha’Allah.

  1. Bailey,
Thank you for this thorough review commenting on the stitching, fabric thickness, and design! Great to see you posting again I too have seen the posts about this company on social media and wondered about it but not enough to investigate. I admit to side eyeing 2-piece abaya (like what is that?) but Iโ€™m also not the target demographic.

Need to catch up on your recent posts

    1. LOL, BarakhAllahFeek for your response sis. LOL, yea Im like a 2 piece abaya…? its basically just an oversized tunic and matching skirt. But in the Gulf states there is indeed a trend for. “2-piece abayaat”…but yeah to me its basically a tunic and skirt. hehehehe.
